And we are off! 

Day one - Mt Albert to Auckland airport (36.6km)

We walked out the front door and eased ourselves in to this slowly by stopping at Crave for breakfast. 



Some friends then very kindly decided to walk some of the first day with us (or as one said, “to make sure we actually leave!”)

Day two - Auckland airport to Bombay (43.4km)


Rachel and Izzy very kindly dropped us back to the airport so we could pick up where we left off.

Day Three: Bombay to Mercer (26km)

Our first self-sufficient day with all our gear! And oh boy, what a difference! Definitely slowed us down a bit!! 
And, just for a change, more rain!!

D-Day - 100 days "I am going to send you an invite to a meeting." my GM said. "Is this the kind of meeting where I should bring a support person?" I asked. And that is where it began! As soon as we knew I was being made redundant, we started to plan our Te Araroa South bound (SOBO) walk. Some amazing friends offered to drive us to Cape Reinga and walk the first few kilometres with us. A date was set and the countdown began! D-Day - 50 days First day of Level Four LOCKDOWN! Northland: 90 Mile Beach to Cape Reinga

 Day 20: Ahipara to Hukatere (33km / 6hrs 45 mins)  So this is it! We are now on THE beach! The beach of sorrow for many (have you seen the photos of their blisters?). The beach to start and finish the TA for a few (we have heard of people who hate it so much they just stop and go home once off the beach). And the beach to officially finish our traverse of the length of New Zealand on the Te Araroa trail!!  OK, OK I am getting slightly ahead of myself here.   I will start today again.  We decided we would start walking about 30 minutes after high tide which was due at around 11am. This gave us another very leisurely start to the day and an opportunity to go back to the cafe where we had had lunch yesterday for breakfast. It was a beautiful morning, slightly overcast but not windy which bode well for good walking conditions.   After breakfast we sat in the holiday park reception area/games room until it was time to go. The Bits We Didn’t Tell You (Auckland to Bluff)

The Editor’s Cuts Auckland to Bluff took us 93 days, including nine rest days. Of these rest days, five were weather related, two were for social reasons (hanging out with friends), one was for admin (to book the kayak section etc.) and one because we just felt like we needed a good rest! Over the last 3.5 months (before reaching Bluff) between us we have had:   Two trips back to Auckland (one funeral, one wedding)  One hospital visit  One physio appointment  One osteopath appointment  One GP appointment  Two lots of X rays One lot of blood tests  Lots of Voltarin and paracetamol (K only)  Some tears (from K only and fortunately not too often)  Some swearing (from both of us, but usually on different days and usually aimed at the track or the trail app, not at each other!)  A lot of flavoured tuna sachets (in wraps with cheese for lunch, pretty much every day!)
