Through Hamilton and Beyond
Day six: Through Hamilton to far side of Whatawhata (32km)
We had a lovely day. Roger’s brother, John, and his wife, Sherwin joined us for about 5km as we walked through Hamilton. They took us to their favourite cafe for coffee which was great.
Leaving the river after a while we then walked through an arboretum which was very impressive. Then we crossed lots of farmland. At Whatawhata we stopped at our favourite cafe there before carrying on to the bottom of Old Mountain Road. We then hitched a ride back to the outskirts of Hamilton for another night of comfort and great company at Evan and Linda’s house.
Start of the day selfie.
Just along the river trail.
On the river trail in Hamilton city.
It’s Christmas! We found this big Tree in Hamilton CBD.
On the road down to the arboretum
You would be gutted if you were looking for a way out!
Young American couple walking the TA north bound (NOBO). I had serious pack envy! They had everything in two 40 litre packs.
Lunch stop as we crossed more farmland.
Just heading in to Whatawhata.
Day seven: Old Mountain Road to the car park at Kaniwhaniwha Reserve (Approx 17km)
A short day to get us as close to the start of Mt Pirongia as possible with day packs.
Starting to see limestone outcrops and more great views out across the farmland.
Mt Pirongia popped out above the clouds to say hello and to invite us to tackle her tomorrow. We are both very excited to be taking on the challenge as neither of us have been up there before.
You too might have 40l pacs by the time you finish. It is amazing what you can do without when needs must. Living following your journey, Scott has dreams of this, I don't!
